Preamble

Biomedical engineering involves the detailed study of patient-specific information to diagnose and characterize disease. The concept of biomedical engineering is rapidly growing in the medical community through tremendous expansion in various advanced technologies such as next-generation sequencing, molecular biomarker analysis, bioinformatics, and big-data analytics among others. Owing to such advanced technologies, biomedical engineering has acquired immense potential to prevent, and treat various diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, neurological and other diseases, which are burdening the present healthcare system.

The Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (BERC) of the University of Cyprus, was established via the Senate decision in 2016 that was approved by the House of Representatives of the Government of Cyprus in 2019. It is a Centre that involves a multi-disciplinary approach to solving pressing medical needs and engages faculty members of the School of Engineering, the School of Pure and Applied Sciences and the School of Medicine.

It is a modest establishment with a bold aim: to become a world leader in the development of new technologies (hardware and algorithms) to further enable and accelerate the development, translation, and application of biomedical engineering. BERC cooperates with all the major medical centres on the island, including public and private hospitals, the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre, as well as with SMEs, and industry. Moreover, the Centre’s network encompasses advanced partners, both in the EU and in North America and Asia, all leaders in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Technologies. The Centre is supported by world-class researchers in the field whose past successes, we believe, will make BERC a world-class, sustainable Centre of Excellence that will address vital biomedical problems which affect humanity, and will contribute to the education and training of a new breed of clinicians and researchers who will be at the forefront of this growing field.
