Dr Chris Christodoulou (male) (Associate Professor at the Dept. of Computer Science, University of Cyprus; http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~cchrist/) trained in Electronic Engineering (BEng), obtained a PhD in Computational Neuroscience/Neural Networks and also holds a BA in German all from the University of London. Since 1991, he has been investigating computational neuroscience as well as machine learning, artificial neural networks and their applications. He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications and he reviews for over 30 major journals in his areas of interest and beyond. Since the mid-nineties, his work on understanding neuronal coding, i.e., how the brain encodes/decodes and transmits information, has been highly regarded and made him and his collaborators one of the leading groups in this area internationally. It has to be noted that he has recently co-edited four special issues on neuronal coding, two in the highly-acclaimed journal of Brain Research and two in the prestigious journal BioSystems. He has also been studying the temporal and stochastic features of neurons and modelling and implementing them with artificial hardware-realisable computational neuron models. Moreover, he has worked on computational modelling of self-control and precommitment behaviour, which is an application of multiagent reinforcement learning in general-sum stochastic games as well as the development of a biophysical model which enables the understanding of the role of cannabinoids in learning and memory. Other strands of his work include the design of non-linear local reinforcement learning rules through neuroevolution and the achievement of behaviour plasticity through the modulation of switch neurons. He has also worked on the issue of solving one-to-many problems as well as on machine learning and neural network applications including protein secondary structure prediction, face recognition, speaker identification, earthquake prediction and fraud detection. Furthermore, Dr Christodoulou has long experience in coordinating research projects. Over the last 10 years he secured funding totalling to over €400K euro after successful grant proposal applications as Principal Investigator. In addition, he has been supervising 5 postdoctoral researchers and he had 4 PhD students successfully completing their PhDs.
